Korean company to buy Karbi Anglong ginger

Guwahati, 31 July – Ginger cultivated in the hilly areas of Karbi Anglong district in the State, will hit the Koren and Japanese markets soon. A leading firm of Japan has evinced a keen interest to import ginger from the bordering district while a group of Korean traders are in talks wih the Gin-Fed to sign an MoU in this regard.
“A three-member group of South Korea had visited our town recently and they are coming again by the end of this month to ink the deal,” Jiten Sarangfangsa, Managing Director of Ginger Growers Co-operative Marketing Federation Limited (Gin-Fed Limited) told this correspondent today. In this context, he said that Gin-Fed had also receieved quarries from Germany and United Kingdom. “We have sent samples aas per their requirements.” he added.
Providing feedback on the new trade link with South Korea, Sarangfangsa revealed that Korean traders had sought a bulk quantity from KArbi Anglong. “Our ginger has a big demand in the market due presence of high oil content, probably due to which they have come forward to purchase our ginger,” he said, adding that Gin-Fed is also sending samples to Japan.
Total ginger cultivation in Karbi Anglong district is nearly 14, 000 MT per annum, of which about 10, 000 MT are sold in the Indian market and rest are sold by the Gin-Fed through different companies. Gin-Fed has tied with VS International, Sresta, a Hyderabad based company and Ace Agro. There are about 7000 farmers are closely associated with ginger cultivation in Karbi Anglong district.
Gin-Fed, which has been encouraging the local farmers towards ginger cultivation, is now in the process of involving more youths in the district.”We have applied for organic certification as soon as we get the approval, we will be exporting to European countries directly,” Sarangfangsa informed.
