NEW DELHI, Aug 24 – Bowing to pressure from tribal students of the North-east, the Union Government has rejected the Delhi Government’s proposal to reduce the Schedule Tribe (ST) quota to one per cent from seven per cent. Sources said that the Delhi Government’s proposal brought in form of a bill was sent back to the Government with a direction that it should be reversed.
Angry students, parents and local students’ bodies were highly agitated by the revision of the reservation policy. Delegations that also included ASDC leader Holiram Terang, have been lobbying with various Central Ministers including Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit to reverse the policy.
Sources further disclosed that the proposal that ST reservation shall be limited to tribal students from Delhi is also being reversed. The seven per cent quota would now include all ST students including those from the North-east.
Union Minister of State for Rural Development, Agatha Sangma protesting the move had written to the Union Home Minister and the HRD Minister. The reservation for ST students in educational institutions of Delhi has been reduced to one per cent arbitrarily and without notice, she said.
The sudden change in policy had affected the counselling process for BE courses in DCE and NSIT and Indraprastha University.
