GUWAHATI, Feb 15: The family of one Ramchandra Sah, living as a next-door neighbour of Khorsing Engti, Assam’s Veterinary and Hills Area Development (HAD) Minister, alleged that they had been persistently harassed with physical and mental torture by him with a view to grab their land. The family is having its home and land in Pan-Engti Gaon of Howraghat in Karbi Anglong district.
Talking to the media at the Guwahati Press Club today, Sah’s two daughters, Radhika Sah and Gayatri Sah, said that their land measuring three kathas and 12 lesas had become a cynosure of Engti’s greed for land, and that he had been using all his tricks to force them to vacate their home and land. The Nari Mukti Sangram Samiti, a sister organization of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), and Niryatan Birodhi Aikya Mancha have now come out in the open to support Sah’s beleaguered family against Engti’s attempts.
The Sah sisters lamented that their family had been living in constant fear ever since the night of October 30, 2010 when a group of the minister’s henchmen broke into their house and ransacked their property, even as accusing the sisters of practising witchcraft. These men spent about 18 hours inside the house, physically and mentally torturing the family members. Both the girls were divested of their clothes, they said. The sisters also alleged that property worth more than Rs 10 lakh was taken away by these persons. When a complaint in this regard was lodged at the nearby police station, no action was taken by the police, they said. Later the CRPF came to their help and gave them protection, they added.
But it was not all over with that. After a few days, Engti gave a call to the family informing them that he would be sending a person with some papers to be signed by them, according to the two girls. However, the family members of Sah did not cow down under such threat, as they did not want to part away with their land and home, they said.
Executive member Jinti Gogoi Soukadhara of the Nari Mukti Sangram Samiti, secretary of the Niryatan Birodhi Aikya Mancha Sabita Lahkar, and noted writer Maini Mahanta have now demanded stern action against Engti if one more instance of such harassment was meted out to the victimized family.
