Surrendered KPLT member, foreground, Alex Singh, openly brandishing a pistol in Diphu town, Karbi Anglong. In the background are his men beating up a youth, on the left.

A trifle matter that can be solved with a little politeness was blown out of proportion when Alex Singh draw out his pistol and openly threaten the youth. Somehow KLNLF militant leaders got wind of the incident and reached there. Local reporters were already there when the biker youth was being beaten up by the former militant Singh.

The incident left people wondering as to how a surrendered militant, who is now a civilian can go around town with arms. People are saying that some quarters might have an interest in keeping surrendered militants with arms in order to carry out doubtful activities. Such incidents are a precursor to bringing ‘gun culture’ into the society.

Truck driver shot dead in Karbi Anglong

January 27, 2011

DIMAPUR, JAN 26: In a belated report received here today, a truck driver belonging to the Ao community is reported to have been shot dead by members of a Karbi Anglong militant organisation at Langli Bosti in Hidipi area of Karbi Anglong on Tuesday afternoon.
According to sources, the incident took place when the driver was on his way back to Nagaland with his truck loaded with timber. One GB belonging to a village in Karbi Anglong was also reportedly shot dead. The truck was then set on fire by the militants, sources informed.
The deceased, identified as Imlikokba (late 20s), was taken to his native village Watiyim in Mokokchung district for burial.
The reason behind the incident is also still vague as conflicting reports abounded over the killing. Some sources put the blame on Karbi Peoples’ Liberation Tiger (KPLT) since they had called for a 36-hour bandh from Tuesday 5 am onwards as part of its campaign to boycott Republic Day celebrations on Wednesday. A police source said Karbi Longri NC Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF) was involved in the killing. However, none of these reports could be confirmed.
Meanwhile, according to other sources, a dozen militants belonging to KPLT had descended at Langli Bosti in Hidipi area of Karbi Anglong Tuesday afternoon and torched the truck loaded with logs. They later killed the truck driver,  and fled from the scene. While the cause of the killing was not known, police teams from Bokajan and Diphu are reported to have rushed to the spot. However, it has to be noted that earlier, KPLT has dictated shot at sight order for those defying the Bandh called by them.
